A person was fatally struck by a train in Te Kuiti early on Saturday.
Police say the incident happened at about 1.30am, near Hospital Road at the northern end of the town. But it did not happen near a railway crossing.
The man is described as a young Maori male.
Senior Sergeant Rob Van Kalken says it is unclear what caused the death, though alcohol may have been a factor.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
Trains resumed at 7am.
