Logging spike predicted

9:04 am on 29 December 2011

The Farm Forestry Association is warning of big trouble ahead for the thousands of small-scale forest owners who invested in logging trees in the 1990s.

After a spike in log prices in the early 90s, the association says 0.5 million hectares of trees were planted.

They are all due to be harvested over five years from about 2022.

The association says there will be a huge demand for contractors, plus congested ports and a plunging log price.

It says the sector needs an overall agency to make sure all farmers are flying in formation.
