A Timaru boy is in a serious condition in Christchurch hospital after being thrown from a quad bike while on a family holiday near Lake Benmore on Thursday.

A Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesperson says the boy, 14, was wearing a helmet, but sustained serious head injuries and a fractured arm when the bike hit a bump on Thursday.

He says the boy's mother accompanied him in the helicopter to the hospital, where he was placed in an induced coma.

Canterbury District Health Board says he is in a serious, but stable condition.
