Police in Wanaka have named the tramper who died on New Year's Eve while climbing Mount Twilight in the Mount Aspiring National Park.
He was Michael Gillard Taylor, 60, from Wellington.
Police say Mr Taylor was tramping with members of the Tararua Tramping Club, who were on their annual Christmas tramping trip.
Senior Constable Mike Johnston of the Wanaka Search and Rescue says Mr Taylor set out alone on New Year's Eve, and a search was organised after he failed to return that evening.
He says a helicopter located Mr Taylor's body in a steep rocky section on the northern aspect of the mountain.
