Vigilance urged in the water

Water Safety New Zealand is urging vigilance in the water.

Chief executive Matt Claridge says the per capita annual drowning toll here is twice the rate of Australia and three times the United States.

Mr Claridge says many of those drowning are Maori men as they often go into the water to collect seafood for gatherings, despite dangerous ocean conditions.

He says there is no room for complacency or alcohol when taking to the water.
