Oil companies reduce price of fuel

3:23 pm on 17 July 2008

There is some relief for motorists after at least three oil companies dropped the price of petrol and diesel.

Shell and Gull are now selling 91 octane at $2.15 per litre and diesel at $1.88.

Caltex and Shell say their new prices represent a four cents a litre cut across all fuels.

It follows the biggest two-day reduction in the cost of crude oil since January last year.

Crude oil closed in New York more than $US10 lower than two days ago.

Analysts say the latest fall was triggered by an American Government report showing inventories of crude oil rose by three-million barrels last week.

Light sweet crude closed in New York at just over $US134 a barrel.
