Police are investigating an assault on a prison guard at Auckland Prison on Saturday morning.
The Corrections Department says it was an unprovoked attack and the officer was stabbed repeatedly in the neck and head.
Its acting Northern Regional manager, Jeanette Burns, says Corrections has also launched an investigation into the incident.
She says the department is considering the use of stab-proof vests for its officers.
