Appeal against lifting of name suppression in cold case

3:48 pm on 25 January 2012

An appeal has been lodged in the High Court to prevent the publication of the name of an elderly man charged with a 32-year-old cold case killing.

He is charged with the murder of Rodney Tahu in Turangi in 1979 and appeared in the Rotorua District Court on Wednesday morning.

At the hearing, it was revealed Judge Phillip Cooper had lifted suppression of the 71-year-old's name.

However, layer for the accused, Jonathan Temm, told the court he intended to appeal the decision on behalf of his client.

Name suppression of the accused will continue until the appeal is heard, which could be between three and four weeks time.

He will next appear in court on 10 February.
