Police are blaming speed, and possibly alcohol, for a crash that killed four men and left two others seriously injured south of Wairoa on Wednesday night.
The four men, all from Wairoa, died when the car they were in collided with a 4-wheel-drive towing a boat on State Highway 2 near Raupunga.
The driver of the 4-wheel-drive is in a critical condition and a passenger from the other vehicle is in a serious condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital.
Senior Sergeant Tony Bates of Wairoa police says three of the men who died were not wearing seatbelts.
