Auckland taxi driver stable after stabbing

An Auckland taxi driver is in a stable condition in hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed in the chest.

The ambulance service says staff were called to the 46-year-old driver in Manukau Road in Epsom at about 6.30am on Thursday.

Police say the driver picked two people up from Auckland city and drove them to Epsom, where they fled without paying.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Hooper says the driver followed the pair to an address on Manukau Road and requested payment.

He says there was an altercation, and the taxi driver was stabbed with a knife.

Detective Senior Sergeant Hooper says a 21-year-old man has been arrested

and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

The man is due to appear in the Auckland District Court on Thursday.
