Waikato police's warning to motorists over Anniversary Weekend

8:05 am on 28 January 2012

The police in Waikato are warning drivers to expect zero-tolerance for anyone travelling 4km over the speed limit this weekend, which is the province's Anniversary Weekend.

The warning comes after two fatal crashes this week.

In the latest, 68-year-old Velma McNally died near Tuwhare yesterday.

The Acting District Commander, Greg Nicholls, says he has instructed all staff, and not just road policing officers, to be vigilant.

He says preventing road trauma is everybody's responsibility, including the public.

Mr Nicholls says not only will the speed limit be strictly enforced, but all drivers dealt with by the police will be breath-tested.
