Grandfather lunges at Cina Ma accused in court

There have been dramatic scenes at a court appearance for the man accused of abducting a five-year-old Auckland girl.

Cina Ma was returned to her family a week ago, after being snatched from outside her North Shore home. The family says the child is suffering nightmares from the ordeal.

A 25-year-old Chinese national charged with kidnapping her for ransom appeared in the North Shore District Court on Friday morning. His name is suppressed.

The girl's family members were in the public gallery, with her grandfather sobbing throughout the proceedings.

When the accused was led from the dock Cina Ma's mother called out, saying he was a devil.

The child's grandfather then had to be restrained by police when he jumped up and and tried to get to the man.

The accused has been remanded in custody to reappear in court in August.
