Weather halts recovery of fuel from grounded boat

Sanford Limited, the fishing company that owns the stricken vessel San Cuvier, says unsettled weather has made it impossible to remove fuel from the wreck on Tuesday.

Sanford expects it to be at least two days before it is able to take off about 8000 litres of fuel from the fishing boat, which grounded on rocks near Opotiki early on Sunday morning.

Fishermen Rick Josephs and Damien Wyatt were killed when it grounded. Mr Wyatt's body has not been found. Two surviving crew members were taken to Whakatane hospital.

Sanford spokesperson Tom Birdsall says company personnel and regional council staff boarded the boat and have put together a plan to remove the fuel as soon as the weather permits.

Mr Birdsall says the 18-metre boat is valued at more than $500,000.
