Police officer crushed by vehicle

7:49 am on 31 July 2008

A police constable is in hospital in Auckland with serious injuries after being hit by a vehicle that had been pulled over.

Police say the officer approached the car after it was stopped at 11pm on Thursday, when the driver reversed into her, crushing her against a police car.

He then drove off, but stopped about 200 metres away.

A man is due to appear before the Waitakere District Court on charges of excess breath alcohol and serious driving offences.

Inspector Earle McIntosh says the constable is being treated in Auckland Hospital for a broken pelvis and lower back injuries.

She was the second police officer to be run down this month.

Sergeant Derek Wootton was killed in Porirua earlier this month, by the driver of a stolen car.
