New Zealand athlete Melissa Moon was the fastest woman again in this year's annual race up the stairs of Empire State Building in New York.

Moon, 42, from Wellington finished in 12 minutes and 39 seconds, 34 seconds faster than the last time she won in 2010.

Competitors have to run up 1576 steps to the Observatory deck on the 86th floor of the skyscraper. This year's event, the 35th, was the first to be held at night.

The men's race was won by Thomas Dold of Germany for a record seventh time in 10 minutes and 28 seconds.
