6:34 am on 11 February 2012

The senior obstetrician and gynaecologist at Wanganui Hospital says the new maternity proposal needs to go through for the safety of the city's women

The Whanganui and Midcentral District Health Boards want all specialist care such as epidurals, caesareans and inductions to be concentrated at Palmerston North Hospital.

That change could affect up to 400 women a year.

Wanganui Hospital's Mark Stegmann says the current situation is not safe.

Mr Stegmann says Wanganui Hospital is having trouble recruiting staff, despite their best efforts.
