Christ Church dean set to win by-election

Preliminary results in the Christchurch City Council by-election, show that the former dean of Christ Church Cathedral Peter Beck is set to become the city's newest councillor.

Voting in the Burwood-Pegasus ward closed at midday Friday and with 34.03% of voting papers counted, Mr Beck is the highest polling candidate.

The by-election was required following last year's resignation of Christchurch City Councillor Chrissie Williams.

Nine candidates stood for the position, including Steve Burke, Rod Cameron, David East, Raymond Ellwood, Stan Tawa, Linda Stewart, Rik Tindall and Bob Tomkins.
