Beck set to become Christchurch councillor

Final results in the Christchurch City Council by-election have confirmed the outgoing dean of Christ Church Cathedral, Peter Beck, is set to become the city's newest councillor.

A council spokesperson says the final tally, released on Monday afternoon, shows Mr Beck has been elected to represent the Burwood-Pegasus ward as a councillor. The voter turnout with just over 35% .

Nine candidates, including Mr Beck, stood in the by-election which was required following last year's resignation of councillor Chrissie Williams.

Just over 13,950 votes were cast; Mr Beck got 4,811 and his nearest rival, David East, received 2,824.
