The police called off their search on Monday for a man who fell into the Waikato River from a bridge in central Hamilton, because the river is too swollen.
Deon Bruce Cowdry, 21, was seen to lose his footing and fall from Victoria Bridge on Saturday night. He struggled in the river, which was swollen after heavy rain, but was quickly lost from sight.
Searches were carried out by family and a police rescue boat over the weekend. The boat was used again in Monday's search, but because the river is running very high and fast, the police say it is not safe to deploy the police dive squad.
Senior Sergeant Kent Holdsworth says the search will resume on Tuesday.
