Brownlee urged to lower Kapiti road deaths

7:10 pm on 15 February 2012

Kapiti Emergency Medical Service head Chris Lane says the Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee has to take responsibility for reducing the number of road deaths north of Wellington.

Dr Lane says four deaths in the past month from head-on crashes have given fresh emphasis to a need for wire barriers in black spots around Paekakariki and from Otaihanga to Waikanae.

But he says the Transport Agency has been constantly putting off or delaying plans to erect the barriers, despite what he says is clear evidence they work.

Dr Lane says there is an urgent need for action and Mr Brownlee must step in and take responsibility to get the wire rope barriers built.
