Taxes and asset sales excluded from funding debate

Auckland Council members are against new regional taxes to fund transport projects.

The council has been exploring how to plug an estimated gap of $15 billion in funding and Mayor Len Brown wanted a list of 13 possible options put to Auckland people to gauge their reactions.

By majority vote, the council has shortened that list to 10, removing the options of a regional goods and services tax and regional payroll and income taxes.

A move to add the sale of council assets to the list was defeated on the casting vote of Cr Penny Webster.

The prospect of Auckland seeking regional taxes has been greeted coolly by the Prime Minister and Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee.
