Couple escape injury in boat explosion

5:56 pm on 19 February 2012

The Fire Service says two people on board a small boat that exploded in Half Moon Bay, east Auckland, this morning were lucky to escape without injury.

A man and his wife were getting ready to embark on a cruise at 9.45am when the man turned the engine on and the boat exploded.

An officer at Howick fire station, Kenton Rusbridge, says it appears an electrical fault was the cause.

Two fire engines attended the scene and the Fire Service said it would investigate the cause.
