Tongario rescuers busy after three incidents

9:21 pm on 19 February 2012

Rescuers in the Tongario National Park have been kept busy this weekend, responding to three separate incidents, despite poor weather.

An Irish tourist had to be rescued from Mount Ngauruhoe after he broke a collar bone and dislocated a shoulder.

Later a woman had to be rescued from the same mountain after injuring her knee.

Another man suffered a heart attack near Red Crater on the Tongario Alpine Crossing.

He is now recovering in Waikato Hospital's cardiac care unit.

Police are praising the efforts of members of the Ruapehu Alpine Rescue Organisation, particularly after low cloud and poor weather hampered rescue efforts.
