Diwesh Sharma pleaded guilty to the charge at the High Court in Hamilton on Monday.

Police say his wife, Ranjeeta Sharma, was still alive when he poured fuel over her and set her alight beside a rural road near Huntly in January 2011.

He then took the couple's four-year-old son and flew to Fiji where he was arrested soon afterwards.

His barrister, Roger Laybourn, says his client has been consistently sad and remorseful about his actions but accepts his position.

Sharma has been remanded in custody to appear for sentencing on 3 April.
