The lawyer representing a motorist convicted for killing a cyclist says his client's momentary act of carelessness has had devastating consequences.
Yvonne Van Roy has been convicted of careless driving causing the death of Benjamin Lawless in a collision in the Wellington suburb of Karori in January 2011.
She was disqualified from driving for nine months and ordered to pay the victim's family $37,000.
Van Roy's lawyer, John Miller, says no speeding or drink driving was involved, and she was only careless for a short time, which unfortunately had devastating consequences.
Mr Miller says Van Roy has taken out a bank loan for the reparation which was paid out Wednesday.
He says she has tried to meet the family to apologise to them, which has been met with some resistance.
