Crown signs Terms of Negotiation with Auckland region iwi

9:20 pm on 7 August 2008

The Crown has signed Terms of Negotiation with the Auckland region iwi Te Kawerau a Maki to settle its historic Treaty of Waitangi claims.

The claims are the subject of two Waitangi Tribunal reports, and cover the Mahurangi and Tamaki Makaurau regions.

The Treaty Negotiations Minister, Michael Cullen, says the claims primarily relate to the purchase of Te Kawerau a Maki land, the operation of Native Land Laws and public works takings.

He says Thursday's signing is a tribute to the efforts of those who have been involved in the claims process during the last 14 years.
