Police have named an American diver who died while snorkelling off the Kaikoura coast.
Vincent He, 32, from Boston, had been in Christchurch for two weeks working with Habitat for Humanity.
Sergeant Barry Hansen, of Kaikoura, says Mr He was last seen about 6.30pm on Saturday.
Mr Hansen says Mr He's friends contacted police shortly after 8pm when they could not find him.
Mr He's body was discovered by the police dive squad about 11.45am on Sunday, not far from where he had gone missing.
He says it appears Mr He had become tangled in kelp while snorkelling.
