Prison lockdown for weapon searches

12:01 pm on 8 August 2008

Auckland Prison at Paremoremo is to be locked down again on Friday so weapon searches can be held.

Two inmates at Paremoremo were hospitalised on Wednesday after a stabbing incident involving four prisoners.

The prison was locked on Wednesday night and Thursday morning as a result.

The Department of Corrections says the lockdown and searches are standard operating procedures after assaults involving weapons.

Both prisoners have been discharged from hospital and sent back to prison.

The incident involved a group of up to 12 prisoners who used makeshift weapons.

Police say it will be early next week before they know whether any charges will be laid.

Corrections Minister Phil Goff said on Thursday the fight was thought to be gang-related. He said no prison officers were involved.
