National Party reviews security camera footage

The National Party is reviewing security camera footage obtained from the Wellington City Council to identify who might have secretly taped conversations with senior politicians.

The tapes were made during a cocktail party at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington and released to the media.

The council earlier refused to release security camera footage on privacy grounds, but after taking legal advice, it released footage from cameras on the two main stairwells at the centre.

Council spokesperson Richard McLean says the cameras are across the room so identification may be difficult.

National's leader, John Key, says the footage is not good quality and it may be difficult to determine the culprits.

The party has been embarrassed by taped remarks made during a cocktail party, which were leaked to the media.

There were no cameras operating in the room where the cocktail function was held.
