Killer could return to prison for taking TV chopper ride

TVNZ will apologise to prison authorities, after possibly breaching a convicted double-murderer's parole conditions by flying him over the scene of his crime.

David Tamihere was released in late 2010, 21 years after he went to jail for killing the Swedish backpackers Heidi Paakkonen and Urban Hoglin.

Tamihere, 58, is prohibited from entering the Coromandel Peninsula, where the crimes were committed, but TVNZ flew him across the area while filming for a documentary which screens on Sunday.

He has been charged with breaching his parole and will appear in Waitakere District Court on Tuesday.

TVNZ says its film crew did not realise the flight constituted a potential breach of parole.

A spokesperson says all footage from the flight has been edited out of the programme.
