Petition presented to Tonga's PM calling for law and order

12:00 pm on 1 December 2006

A petition has been presented to the Tongan prime minister, Dr Fred Sevele, calling for law and order, peace and good governance.

Radio Tonga says the petition was signed by about 2000 people on the initiative of the Reverend Toe'umu Fineanganofo and Dr. Toakase Fakakovikaetau who claim to have no political interest.

The petition, which is also addressed to the King and the Speaker, calls on government to rescind the memorandum of understanding with the seven people's representatives.

It says the rule of law is paramount and it calls for the perpetrators of the unrest two weeks ago to be brought to justice.
