About 200 teachers are reportedly stranded in Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands province and cannot go home for the Christmas holidays.

The National newspaper reports the teachers are saying they haven't yet received their leave fares.

Manson Donode from Oro province teaching in the highlands says the leave fares are a teacher's entitlement and they must be made available before the Christmas holiday starts for them to travel home.

Mr Donode says his application for leave fares were lodged with the education division in April this year.
