A survey has found that 22 percent of 13 to 18-year-olds in Fiji are either overweight or obese.

The study was part of Fiji School of Medicine's Obesity Prevention in Communities Programme.

"The project's manager, Gade Waqa, says it's the first time the country has surveyed that age group and the result is worrying."

FIJI OBESE TP

The result of the baseline survey has showed us that there's about 22 percent of students in Fiji, aged between 13 and 18 are either overweight or obese. And this is an alarming figure for us taking into consideration the rate of non-communicable diseases that the country is already facing.

Gade Waqa says it'll need a multi-sector approach to address the issue and children will need to adopt a healthier lifestyle to avoid a major health disaster.
