American Samoa's Starkist plant poised for expansion

1:39 pm on 15 January 2013

Officials of the parent company of StarKist Samoa have revealed plans to expand its cannery plant at Satala in American Samoa and hire between 500 to 1,000 new employees.

StarKist representatives who visited Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga last week revealed plans to expand production capacity

The governor's executive assistant, Iulogologo Joseph Pereira, says StarKist wishes to collaborate with the local shipyard to build capacity and improve the shipyard's attractiveness to vessels to be able to off-load catches in the territory.

He says this in turn would generate jobs and provide economic benefits.

Cannery officials told the governor they are no longer planning to build a cold storage facility on the main dock in Fagatogo.
