Student loan changes in line with election policy - PM

7:57 pm on 13 March 2012

Prime Minister John Key says the Government will not proceed with any changes to student loans that were not part of National's 2011 election policy platform.

Mr Key told an Auckland audience on Tuesday the Government intends to make further changes to bring down the level of student loan debt.

National campaigned on boosting enforcement and the collection of overdue loans overseas, and ensuring students do a course of study which leads to a job that allows them to repay their loan.

And the Government will impose a limit on the amount some students can borrow if they are undertaking very large course loads in one academic year.

Mr Key says the Government will not make any changes that are not in line with National's election manifesto.
