NZ offers to re-deploy to peace observers to Syria

3:27 pm on 24 April 2012

The Government has offered to re-deploy two of its military observers already in the Middle East to take part in the United Nations mission in Syria.

A spokesperson for Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says the Government is waiting to hear back from the UN.

New Zealand has seven observers in Israel, Lebanon and Syria as part of an existing UN mission observing a truce between the three countries.

Two of those are in Syria, but Mr McCully's spokesperson says it is up to the Defence Force whether they or others are re-deployed if the UN accepts the offer.
