Changes to Families Commission

3:52 pm on 29 May 2012

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says there will be some quite dramatic changes at the Families Commission, as it now has only half the money to work with.

The Government has confirmed it's overhauling the agency - cutting the number of commissioners from seven to one, and redirecting half its funding to a new research unit.

The Social Policy Evaluation and Research Unit will now get half of the Commission's annual budget of $7 million.

The unit will be headed by an academic panel and overseen by the commission's board.

Ms Bennett says some of the 40 jobs at the commission could go and it will have to cut its programme considerably.
