Govt could extend rate flexibility scheme

The Government could consider giving other councils flexibility in rate setting if a scheme in Christchurch is successful.

From next month, Christchurch City Council will be able to reassess a property's rates during the year as infrastructure is developed or demolished.

Current rating legislation means the value of a property is established at the start of a financial year and the rates apply throughout the year regardless of any development.

Local Government Minister David Carter says Christchurch requested the ability to set rates as changes happen.

Both the Greens and the Labour Party support the move.
