Govt defers decision on help for Kaeo flood victims

8:39 pm on 21 October 2008

The Government has put off a decision on funding for Far North flood victims who need to lift or relocate their homes.

More than 20 homes in Kaeo must be raised or shifted to comply with the building code after major floods last year, but the cost is not covered by insurance.

Northland Labour MP Shane Jones, who is also Minister for Building and Construction, is backing a request by the Far North District Council for government help for the homeowners.

But a council spokesperson says the Cabinet has referred the request to the department of Building and Housing for further work.

The spokesperson says the funding request does not meet current criteria for assistance.

Some Far North families are still camping in their gutted homes, unable to go ahead with repairs until the buildings are lifted.

Northland National MP John Carter says the flood victims have been fobbed off once again by the Government.

Mr Carter, who is also the National Party's local government and Civil Defence spokesperson, says they have been in limbo for far too long.
