Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman says the Force's fleet of Unimogs and Mercedes Trucks is no longer fit for purpose.
An initial business case to replace them has gone through Cabinet and a detailed case will be tabled later in the year.
Dr Coleman says the replacements will occur over the next few years.
He says the vehicles cannot be armour plated and they do not operate well in the Pacific.
But Dr Coleman says personnel are not being compromised by the continued use of existing equipment.
