Govt reviews teacher oversight

11:16 pm on 13 July 2012

A review of the body that oversees teachers, and any complaints against them, is getting underway with the appointment of a committee to carry out the work.

Education Minister, Hekia Parata, says the review of the Teachers' Council is to ensure that it will set, and enforce, high standards for teachers and lead discussion on education issues.

She says the review committee will look at what structural and legal changes to the council might be needed to ensure it can carry out those roles.

Pauline Winter, a Pacific leader, has been appointed chair and members include the former Education Review Office chief, Judith Aitken; a Crown Prosecutor, Jonathan Krebs; and the headmaster of Auckland Grammar, John Morris.

Committee members will report back to Ms Parata at the end of October.
