Delegates at the National Party conference have agreed the party should adopt a policy of legalising adoption for civil union partners but Prime Minister John Key says it's not a priority.
The remit to legalise adoption for civil union partners was put up by the northern region Young Nationals, and passed, though there was some opposition.
One Young Nat who supported the remit, Toby Hutton, says it's a logical and minor change to the law.
He says at the moment single people, gay or straight, can adopt a child.
Mr Hutton says if two people in a civil union partnership raise a child and the one who signed the paperwork dies, the surviving partner has no rights.
But Mr Key says there are very few non-family adoptions these days, and there is a question about whether it is worth taking up Parliament's time to change the law.
