English concedes it will be tough to lift exports

The Finance Minister has conceded it will be tough to meet the Government's target of lifting exports from 30% to 40% of annual economic output by 2025.

But Bill English says it is not impossible if a series of changes are put in place to help exporters grow.

Mr English and fellow ministers Steven Joyce and Tim Groser have released the Government's first progress report towards reaching its target.

Mr English says the Government could reach its target if people continue to keep their spending under control and save more, and if public spending is reined in so more money is available for export firms.
