Benefits to be cut for those on arrest warrants

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett has confirmed that the Government will cut any benefits being received by people who outstanding arrest warrants.

Ms Bennett said that of approximately 15,000 people with a current arrest warrant, about 8200 are on benefits.

She said if someone has an unresolved arrest warrant their benefit will be stopped until they do the right thing and come forward.

In exceptional circumstances, where someone poses a danger to the public, the benefit can be stopped immediately at the request of the Police Commissioner.
