The Green Party wants consideration of legislation to ban super trawlers from fishing in New Zealand waters, following a move by the Australian government.
Canberra on Tuesday announced urgent legislation will be drafted to stop a Dutch trawler, the Abel Tasman, fishing in its waters.
Small New Zealand commercial fishing operators say such a vessel would vacuum the ocean, destroying their livelihoods.
The Abel Tasman has a 600 metre net.
Green list MP Steffan Browning said he intends to meet the minister of primary industry and push for similar legislation to be drafted.
