Justice Minister Judith Collins has returned from a visit to the United States saying she is convinced the law changes she is making are the right ones.
Ms Collins last week met officials including the US Attorney-General and the head of the FBI, saw how mediation works in the American Family Court and observed specialist drug courts in action.
New Zealand's first drug court will open its doors in Auckland next month.
Ms Collins says this country would do well to continue handling offenders in a more holistic and comprehensive way, as happens in the United States.
She says the hands-on, almost nanny state treatment she observed would help dig down into what drives reoffending here.
