Health product claims sought on labels

Parliament's health select committee says natural products should carry a label showing the basis of claims being made for the product.

It is one of several changes the committee is recommending be made to the Natural Health Products Bill.

The bill would regulate low-risk health products like the vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements used by millions of New Zealanders.

In its report on Wednesday, the committee says it faced the task of balancing demand for consumer choice, public safety and low compliance costs while responding to the need to reveal the extent to which science underpins products.

It is recommending that products carry a label stating whether they are based on scientific or traditional evidence.

Homeopathic products will not be covered but will need to show good manufacture.

The committee says scientific and manufacturing advice also should be strengthened and the bill renamed.
