Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman expects a decision to be made by Christmas on what help will be given to interpreters working for New Zealand troops in Afghanistan, who fear for their safety when the troops leave next year.
The Government has put up two options for currently employed interpreters: to emigrate to New Zealand or take a three-year salary resettlement package.
Dr Coleman says former interpreters no longer working for the troops will also be given a fair hearing if they believe they are at risk.
