Dalziel to lay complaint over red zone payouts

Labour's Earthquake Recovery spokesperson says she will lay a complaint with the Auditor-General about the Government's handling of payouts for some homeowners in Christchurch's red zone.

Lianne Dalziel says she will lodge the complaint this week, based in part on reports that the Government ignored official advice and slashed payments for properties in the city's residential red zone by half.

Ms Dalziel says the original advice from the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority was to offer affected property owners - those with commercial land and bare sections in the residential red zone - 100% of the most recent rating valuation.

She says the Government has ignored that advice and slashed its offer to half the rateable value.

Ms Dalziel says it was a clear case of a low-ball offer by the Government to people who were under duress to accept.
