Grant to help develop Maori land for housing

3:14 pm on 6 May 2013

A new grant has been launched to help Maori land trusts develop housing on ancestral land.

Associate Housing Minister Tariana Turia on Monday made the pre-Budget announcement of $12 million over four years for infrastructure work needed to build the homes.

Mrs Turia says the grant will assist with connecting power and establishing roading, kerbing and channelling.

The fund expands existing loans already available under the Kainga Whenua scheme to support the development of housing on multiply-owned Maori land.

The Government has also set aside $1.2 million in the Budget to develop community and marae hubs to deliver social services to communities.

The Budget will be delivered on 16 May.
